What Is RSS?

Recently I did an interview with a well known email Internet Marketer. He wanted share with his readers a viewpoint what RSS from someone who using place traditional email marketing. Of course this interview was geared towards other Internet marketers so they all somewhat "get" what RSS is, at least theory.

So, what IS RSS? Again, I find myself laughing, I did interview because I'm fairly new this RSS business myself. RSS really an acronym REALLY SIMPLE SYNDICATION - well at least that's ONE definition one I tend use. Many people have heard word syndication tossed around other media venues, but not when comes Internet until recently. Although RSS has been around quite some time, finally coming into mainstream like a snowball rolling downhill growing gathering momentum.

Why? And really, what RSS? First all everyone who uses Internet either business, personal use, or both, have all come into contact with spam, viruses, spam laws, heard a lot about media. This whole mess has been extremely frustrating those who make a living using Internet, especially by direct email marketing methods. A lot "fixes" have been tried are being implemented try combat ever growing frustration hassle associated with delivering email newsletters subscribers. This where "why" comes into play with RSS. Before I tell you what RSS is, let me explain a bit about email newsletter marketing.

Normally an email newsletter sent out a "list" by those who have supposedly opted in, or requested, receive newsletter. In fact, most list managers now require double opt-in. "Double opt-in" just a way saying you signed up newsletter, then received an email asking you "verify" your subscription - sender wants make doubly certain you are one who signed up newsletter. You were sent verification email by an "autoresponder". An autoresponder an automatic email sent you by a service sender uses pays handle verification other responses subscribers. That done alleviate having send out a personal email every single subscriber which could become extremely tedious time-consuming otherwise.

Still problems persist, because after all many subscribers still "forget" they signed up file spam complaints, which can lead investigations, IP bans even shutdown confiscation all related lists, websites software. Granted, there are some mass-mailers out there who deserve this, but typical newsletter publisher trying deliver helpful, desired content guards their list very carefully. If you're fortunate enough get your newsletter through your subscribers, what happens then? Well, typically, once a subscriber receives your newsletter, they read then naturally delete once they're done reading it. So, you, email marketer publisher have gone all trouble put together a newsletter, comply with spam laws, etc., only have your hard work deleted all while dealing with spam issues, paying list management services and/or paying autoresponder service.

A much better, more viral method online marketing can be done with an RSS feed. Let me explain terms we can all understand (me included!):

Whenever we watch a television series, series called syndicated programming. The series produced once, filmed once, then put out all subsidiary stations across country airing same day at same time according each time zone. So, work done once but duplicated all across nation hundreds affiliate television stations.

RSS Internet works same concept. You input "work" once, every single website carries your syndication code then receives information you just input once. As you update your feeds those feeds are automatically updated every single website has your syndication code. Another upside this that your news does not get deleted by reader - only you can delete it! Another plus every website that carries your code gets regular content provided whenever you update your feed automatically. This all keeps those hungry search engines happy too.

So, you provide content you want market your subscribers by providing them links your RSS feed from your website, meaning you don't have send that out by email either. You can have your code posted your website for anyone read, also offer webmasters input into websites they manage. No link swapping necessary this case either links are not viral like syndication code. It's difference between offering someone a Lear jet place a horse. It's much better offer your syndication code a "swap".

So, now you've avoided spam hassle because anyone reading your feed doing so willingly you have not sent them anything by email so no subscription necessary. You are providing content so not only are your readers happy, your website happy, other webmasters are happy because you're providing consistent content without them doing a thing, you've only done work ONCE! No one deleting any your work, except you if you choose. Your work also staying Internet forever. The search engines are way happy too!

So, before you start that email newsletter campaign, why not consider an RSS feed instead? It can be a much more dynamic option for you!
