RSS feeds
blogs (and blog
pinging) are part
latest hyper-frenzy
internet marketing. Tools
services are mushrooming all over. But there seem
be some rather distorted ideas about all this.
Unless you want
get into
technical stuff, exactly what an RSS feed
doesn't really matter. Now I care because I use them
a lot
things, work with code
do geeky tech stuff. But from a marketing perspective
underlying technical structure
only relevant because
clues us
what
use an RSS feed for. And that's
thing you have
understand.
An RSS marketing feed
not about
feed's content
most cases. Feeds
carry large quantities
content are usually referred
data feeds
that's not what people are going
put
their RSS aggregators. A basic RSS feed consists
a varied number
items with title, a link
full content source
a short extract or description from
full source. There's more but that's
basics.
If you subscribe (by email)
something like
daily New York Times headlines, think about what a typical item looks like:
++++ Big deal thing happens somewhere
++++ By A Writer
++++ Once again an astonishing big deal thing has happened...

Just like an RSS feed item.
What should be obvious from this example
RSS feeds are about change. New content. Updated information. They are not about static content.
The group you want
reach, people who surf via RSS, are looking
an efficient, fast way
identify new content
they are interested in. So if you're going
do an RSS feed, you need
link
report
new
updated content.
There are lots
tools available
will let you create your own feeds, manually or with varying degrees
automation. One
most popular means
by blogging. You really don't need any technical knowledge at all
set up a blog
produce a feed.
You can use a blog just
a feed generator. Basically this
what blog

services are doing. That kind

not
people, it's
search engines. It's a way
alert
SEs
a new site with un-indexed pages exists. Blogs used
way are not what I'm talking about here.
You can create a blog about anything. What's important
new content
added regularly. There are many ways
add valuable content
a blog. You needn't be a brilliant writer, many don't require much or any writing.
The best way
check this out
yourself
blog-surf. No matter what kind
site you have - or what kind
product you want
promote - there's always a way
write about it, find new information, check
report
similar or related products
sites, report
industry news, provide your own opinions
ideas. As most people quickly discover, it's far easier than
sounds at first.
Your blog will produce at least one RSS type feed. Blogger produces just an atom feed, WordPress
other blog software normally produce one or 2 types
RSS feeds
an atom feed. Services like feedburner.com can allow you
"burn" your feed
then promote a single burned url which will provide any kind
feed a user wants.
Now
you have content
an RSS/atom feed
links
that content, your next step
publicize your feed. You have two different main avenues since your blog has real content.
First you can add your feed
RSS search engines
RSS directories.
And second, because your blog has that real content
isn't just an RSS feed generator, you can add your blog
blog search engines
blog directories. You could even use blog traffic exchanges like BlogExplosion.
This
a simple, low - or basically zero - cost, yet highly effective way
get new traffic from at least two sources.
First from your RSS feed. Feeds are an increasingly popular way
save time, search
surf. If your content

interesting people will subscribe

those full articles or posts that interest them -- targeted traffic from a group that
relatively affluent
tech savvy.
Second, blogs are extremely popular. A good blog will get linked, reported, commented on, other blogs may pick up your feed
report items from it. All
this exposure can bring valuable free traffic.
And finally,
an extra good thing, search engines like blogs because
regularly updated content - they are nuts about fresh content -
easily spidered structure blogs use. So
your blog pages get indexed
