Podcasting vs. Blogging

The US Navy blogs. Larry Kudlow CNBC blogs. I'd say "everybody their brother" except (1) it's a cliche (2) may be grammatically inaccurate. Dan Rather only too aware everybody blogs.

But just blogging blogosphere have become widely accepted, blammo--along comes podcasting.

Just what podcasting? Literally, it's broadcasts meant be played MP3 files an iPod or other MP3 player.

Visit podcasters discussion group Yahoo! Groups a dizzying variety terms confuse: FeedBurner, Skype, GarageBand, iPodder, like. Since I'm not yet a podder myself it's not my intent weigh relative merits technologies or discuss how they work together. I'm just here offer some thoughts blogging vs. podcasting.

Actually, podcasting seems have grown out blogging, quite often, podders are bloggers who include podcasts their blogs. The queen this Amy Gahran Contentious.com, who talked about content long before anyone knew what Web content was or (gasp) that was different than print writing: http://blog.contentious.com/. Amy has a terrific podcast why more women should be podcasting, it's part her Amy's Adventures Audio Show.

Amy has an excellent definition podcasting:

Plus, Amy proves, podcasting blogging can work hand hand means delivering content. There are significant differences between two well similarities. Let's look at a few.

Unlike blogging, which only involves discussions RSS, feeds, syndication, various blog platforms such Blogger.com, podcasting marries technology, broadcasting blogging. The technology may be easy use, but takes more time than simply run a Web site or use Blogger.

Also, while bloggers may run into copyright issues, podders may want use a particular piece music only have RIAA lawyers come after them. There are also home distractions a podder's life that some podders decide make part program, such children walking out. While many us wouldn't dream posting our kids Internet because all cyberdangers, some podders have done so, sparking some much-needed discussion about privacy issues what include podcasts.

Like everything else, not all podcasts are created equal. That's why podder leader Julian Doncaster offers Yahoo! Groups podcast-review discussion group: http://www.herecomespod.org.uk/review/. Even people who have never created a podcast before can critique what podcasters are doing. The technical aspect just a small part. What important whether content relevant listener's lives. In this way it's similar reviewing blogs. For example, I would find no relevance or value a blog about hating a particular political party (and there are plenty) or religion (also sadly a plethora out there), or example one about throwing javelins Olympics.

A recent review question podcast-review group about a podcast exercise show asked questions relevance people who do aerobics or a regular workout. This makes perfect sense, like Amazon.com reviews or Epinions.com or Bizrate.com. It's consumer review also peer review podcasts. In our media-driven age, review everything vital.

Blogs also get peer reviewed by Weblog Review (www.weblogreview.com), Weblog Awards (http://2004weblogawards.com/), other Netizen sites who police blogosphere. Peer reviews. Bloggers podders have a responsibility review stand by their products. It's a pity traditional mediaopoly CNN Ted Turner publishing conglomerates don't have that same accountability. In many respects we're back vernacular printing press Gutenberg days when moveable type upset elite publishing monopoly that was held by only educated populations--namely, priests, monks, nuns anyone affiliated with Church. Suddenly, Bibles Chaucer were printed not Latin but Irish/Gaelic native tongues European countries. The leader that movement was Dante, who wrote his Divine Comedy Italian, not Latin. Similarly, podders broadcast not elite commercial-driven network-paradigm but voice talk radio. Although there have been discussions turning podcasting into a business. It was bound happen--after all, bloggers employ Google AdSense support their addiction written word. But podcasting started out a way challenge traditional media.

Not that there aren't some mistakes podcasts or blogs. One podcast about 2004 Oscars mistakenly mentioned Michael Moore was snubbed Best Documentary category. Moore actuality wasn't snubbed. He submitted "Fahrenheit 9/11" Best Picture, obviously Academy voters thought Hilary Swank learning box was more convincing than Moore's flick. But whole, you haven't heard any podcasting or blogging hoaxes--though Theodore Sturgeon would agree, 90 percent everything dubious quality. This includes blogs podcasts, though thankfully I've only listened good 10 percent podcasts ignored most blogs, not out any particular bias but out a time crunch.

The marvelous thing about podcasts blogs that you can access them at any point. In our information overload age, you feel though you have choice again, control over your time. You may not be able get away from media bombardment, but podcasts blogs allow a civilized selectiveness over who you want listen to. That's their greatest similarity greatest gift.
