middle 1990's everyone started talking about needing a website. Now,
new "must have"
a web log or blog. While blogs can come
all shapes
sizes, a blog
just a very simple way
publish a journal, record
events, thoughts, ideas or whatever
author wants
write about. A blog sits
a website - whether
site
run by you or managed by a company
will "host" your blog.
Blogs started coming into
general public's awareness with a large number
political blogs written during
2004 U.S. Presidential election campaign. Because
this, you may think blogging
part journalism
part political commentary,
therefore not
interest
you or
advancement
your business.
Blogs can be journalism. They can be political commentary. They can be personal diaries or journals. They can also be way
you
show your uniqueness
build a conversation around your business
professional interests. That
how I use mine.
Technically Speaking
Because blogs are designed
be easily updated
are already
a website (don't worry you don't need
know ANYTHING about websites or web design
start one), you may find a blog could replace or supplement an email newsletter. They are easier
do, easier
update,
you don't have
worry about emails getting delivered!
If you already have a website, adding a blog can help you get more visitors who are interested
you because you will be writing about your area
expertise. And since
search engines love websites
are tightly focused
updated often, your site can move up quickly
search rankings.
There are plenty
places
learn much more about

blogging. Just do your own search
Google (or your favorite search engine)

latest information.
How You Can Benefit
Let's say you are an insurance agent. You have expertise

benefits you bring
your Clients. A blog gives you a platform

latest ideas related

life planning. You can give Clients (and potential Clients) tips
checklists. You can give them new ideas. You can relate
latest news
your products
services. The ideas are endless; these are just meant

How It Has Helped Me
I started blogging
March
2004. I have certainly gained
benefits described above. Beyond those, I have made new connections with potential colleagues
collaborators who have found my blog
sent me comments, feedback or questions.
By writing regularly (my goal
4 entries or "posts" per week), seldom does a week go by
I don't add someone
my network or use what I am writing
make a new connection with an existing or potential Client.

1. Start reading some blogs. Do a search

idea. Read what others are doing

build your network with these people. Chances are they aren't your competitors
they might be very willing

perhaps even collaborate with you.
2. Learn About RSS. RSS (Really Simple Syndication)
