Blogs,
abbreviation
Web Logs (online journals), are becoming more
more popular all
time. People are starting new blogs at an astounding rate so it's safe
assume
there are constantly people out there who want
know how
get a blog going. Despite personal feelings about
actual quality
majority
blogs out there
Internet, that's what I hope
be able
help you do with this article.
First things first, you need somewhere
deposit your thoughts. You need
decide how you want
attack this. Your choices are:
- To use a blog hosting service such
eBloggy (http://www.ebloggy.com) or BlogEasy (http://www.blogeasy.com).
- To host a blog yourself
a server
your own choice.
Both options have their free or paid subsections. The blog hosting services mentioned here are free but there are paid services out there. MSN now offer 'Spaces', which are essentially blogs attached

find a free service
will offer you
features you'll need
run a blog backend. One place
look
your Internet Service Provider (ISP)
may offer some free web space. This web space often contains
many features
many professional web hosting packages although
offers less space. Blogs tend not
take up a whole lot
room so this shouldn't be a problem. The advantage
hosting your own blog over using a service
you have greater control over how
works, how
looks etc. You also don't have
put up with there being ads
your page (unless you find some free hosting which usually has advertising put at
top
your site). The downside
can be a bit more complicated
function.
If you're going
host your own blog you'll need
find yourself a blog backend. This
program
runs
server
allows you
upload new journal entries while allowing other people
view them. You'll have
either choose a backend
fits within your web hosting package's limits or a hosting package
meets
backend's requirements. The general requirements are PHP
MySQL but you can get some backends that work solely with PHP or even Java. It's important
make sure that you can change
read/write permissions
PHP files
your server (using CHMOD or an equivalent, talk
your host-they'll know what you're talking about). There's a nice breakdown
many different beckends
their features
requirements that can be found at, http://www.asymptomatic.net/blogbreakdown.htm. I personally use Pivot because
doesn't require MySQL
has RSS distribution, which
nice.
Once you've got yourself a hosting package
a backend you need
install
backend. This can get tricky but most
them come with an install program
you should be able
work through
if you follow
instructions that will undoubtedly come with
package. If you run into difficulties your hosting provider's support team should be happy enough
help you along.
So now you have yourself a blog up
running; it's time
fill
with content. What you write
up
you. Generally people write about their lives, how they feel, what they think,
similar topics. You can be much more diverse
creative than this though. You could
example post creative writings
your blog,
well
discuss news
current affairs, or anything else that you can imagine. It's your personal space
write what you like
get
out there
others
read
give their opinions on.
Making people come
read your blog could take some effort. You need
make them aware that
exists
keep
interesting so that they continue coming back. Nothing kills off a readership base like a lack
updates. At first you can start small with your 'publicity' by telling friends
family about it. Put a link
your site
your MSN or other messenger program nickname. Put a link
your email signature so that everyone you email sees it. Get your friends interested
they'll tell others
you'll probably be able
build up a small community with relative ease. For attracting
broader public you need ways
let
wider community know you are out there. Spend time at other people's blogs, make
a habit
head over there
read their posts. If it's appropriate put a link
your site
a comment box or guest book
their site. Visit forums related
blogs (or just forums
general)
become an active member there. As long
you have a link
your site
your signature, people will probably head
over
a look.
You can also submit your blog
lists such
Blogrank.net (http://www.blogrank.net). These are sites dedicated solely
getting people into blog sites,
while
may be hard
climb into
higher ranks, simply having your site listed will probably improve your hit rate. You could also submit your site
many search engines
possible. Perhaps you could even write yourself an article like this one with your link
bio field. Beyond this you're going
have
work out your own methods
publicizing your site. Just think creatively about how
where you can get a link put
you'll be fine.
Getting your blog set up
running can be an involving task but
results will be worth it. A final word
warning: Don't get too engrossed
your blog. You need a life
order
be able
write about your life! As I wrote
a previous article
has been found that blogging can sometimes have a detrimental effect
a person instead
positive effect that
was designed for. Try not
write only
yourself; it's a public forum
others
read so try
write entries that will be
some benefit
wider community
well
you. Blog safe
have fun!
