Shared RSS - Syndication
|
RSS Syndication or RSS Newsfeeds (RSS Feeds
short) all refer
same thing. There are two parts
process,
publisher,
consumer. The publisher produces a small text file
a special format
lists
title
address
an article or resource published
World Wide Web. The consumer uses a program, usually called an aggregator
read
display
contents
simple text file, with links
web page. Or
consumer may visit a website
includes an aggregator program,
view
results
a web page. Members
Yahoo.com,
example, can set their personal 'My Yahoo' pages
display
contents
any RSS feeds they select.
That
all there
it. Simple. That's why some people say RSS stands
'Really Simple Syndication.'
Some confusion has arisen because an RSS feed may be used
several ways. Calling
a 'newsfeed'
first mistake, since RSS
used
much more than news. The most common situation
RSS items listed
have a short title, link
original web page referred to,
a short description
contents
web page. But other people are including
complete contents
their resource directly
RSS feed. So
feed may contain a graphic image
a cartoon, an entire post
a weblog (or blog), or
complete contents
a newsletter, rather than just a link back
those resources
a web site. Other sites leave out
description,
just list titles linked back
their website. And some versions
RSS allow you
leave out
title, so long
you have a description.
Speaking
'versions'
RSS,
source
even more confusion. RSS began with version 0.90,
was called 'RDF Site Summary' --
RDF refers
'Resource Description Framework,'
method
labeling different parts
file. This early version was updated
changed through various incarnations, including 0.91, 0.92, 0.93
0.94,
they began
call RSS 'Really Simple Syndication.' Then someone came along with a different format, slightly more complicated,
called
RSS version 1.0. Supporters
version 0.94 didn't like
implication
1.0 was somehow an advance
0.94 when
actuality
was a completely different format, so they came up with version 2.0 which was an improved version
0.94, but still unlike 1.0. Rather than take sides
all this squabbling, someone else came up with their own version
called
Atom,
distance themselves from
RSS battles. Someone else developed Blogrolls
use OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language). Most
these formats are either loosely or strictly based
XML,
parent mark-up scheme.
None
this confusion
method
purpose has helped spread this really useful tool. Most RSS aggregators can read any
these formats, so
situation
not
hopeless
may seem, but many folks still throw
whole thing out when they can't figure out exactly how
supposed
work.
On http://www.SharedRSS.com/ we use version 1.0 because
endorsed by W3C
being supportive
'semantic web.' For
casual user however,
version
really not important. SharedRSS

RSS Syndication was designed

But what about all those sites that only add an occasional new article or story

little value; very few people will add

Shared RSS solves this problem by lumping together articles from different sites covering
