VOIP Phone Service FAQ and Answers Part One

By: Kelly Renaul

VOIP Telephony is one of the fastest growing technologies today, with an estimated 22 million subscribers in the United States alone, and an established presence in many other countries as well.

If you haven’t made the switch to broadband Internet based telephone service, the good news is that there has never been a better time to do so. Here are some FAQ and Answers to common VOIP questions to help you become knowledgeable about this new, innovative way to make phone calls.

How is VOIP different from traditional telephone service? Traditional telephone service operates on a circuit switching system, which means that when you make a long distance call, you are connected to an open circuit, and your rate is determined by how long you utilize this circuit.

This is part of the reason why VOIP phone service can save you money, since VOIP operates via your Internet connection, which means that information is only sent on an as needed basis, and you do not pay for any dead time, i.e. the time that it takes the other party to respond to your call, etc.

VOIP technology sends information, or data, in packets, a method that is both more efficient and more cost effective, for both your VOIP phone service provider, and you.

Will my VOIP cause problems with internet browsing? VOIP uses your broadband Internet connection, but unlike with a traditional phone call, doesn’t use up all of the line, just the small portion of it necessary for the call.

This means that you can make VOIP calls and browse the Internet at the same time, which anyone who has had to choose between a phone call and Internet use will tell you is a true benefit of VOIP phone service.

How many VOIP phone lines can my broadband internet connection handle? That depends on you. You can of course put VOIP compatible cordless phone systems in every room of your house, but adding additional VOIP numbers to your Internet connection does increase the load on your broadband.

This is why you should have a test run on your Internet connection in order to determine how many different lines it is able to support. It is always best to run and test and determine this before you actually purchase service.

Your VOIP phone service provider will be able to help you with this. Once you have determined how many phone lines you are able to accommodate, you can better determine which VOIP calling plan to adopt.
