Losing The Phat Gut - Are Ab Machines Dead?

By: John Saxon

A trimmed and toned stomach is something that almost everyone wants. For women, after they give birth, it seems that their abs just aren’t as likely to return to the way they used to be. We've all tried a stomach exercise routine but who can truely resist the pledges made by a vast selection of of the ab exercise machines available today.

Our bellies can cause us a great deal of grief. So much emphasis is placed on having a trimmed mid-section that if you have an extra little pouch of "blubber" there, you feel very self-conscious about it. Using one of the stomach training machines that are on the market today, can work but it’s actually dependent on one ultra important factor.

That factor is whether or not you are likely to make a life change. Losing weight isn’t about doing the odd ab workout on an abdominal machine. It’s about modifying your eating habits, your physical activity level on an ongoing basis and making some important lifestyle modifications. If you use an ab machine but continue to drink sugar laden sodas and eat potato chips, your tummy isn’t going anywhere but 'down and out'!

There are a vast amount of alternatives when it comes to increasing your fitness level. If you’ve never actually exercised much in the past, you most probably don’t want to jump right into using one of the stomach training machines at the gym. The reason is that your body isn’t going to respond positively and besides, you can seriously injure yourself. Walking on the other hand, is a great way to warm up prior to attempting any ab training.

Some folks who are carrying extra weight are embarrassed to go to the gym to work-out. They feel self-conscious about putting on work-out gear and being drenched in perspiration in front of strangers. The thing to remember is that everybody is there for the same reason and that’s to get in better shape. A large percentage of folks at the gym are so concentrated on what they are busy with, that they don’t give you a second thought or look.

When I was looking for some exercise equipment recently I decided to pop in at the gym to check out at what was out there and more importantly to give it a spin to see if it was something I’d enjoy. They had treadmills, elliptical machines and several varying ab training machines. I 'test drove' several and soon noticed that if nothing else they actually worked. I could feel my core muscles burning after just a number of minutes on the machine.

I looked at prices on the net and then finally selected a model that fit both my overall fitness level and my budget. I’ve been using it for a number of months and can see some results. I even feel more energetic when I look in the mirror. Although some people might tell you that ab exercise machines are doing the same job as sit-ups, I’d say my newly trimmed and toned six-pack is proof that’s not necessarily true.
