Colon Cleanse

By: Alevoor Rajagopal

Problems leading to colon cleanse are in direct connection with our normal diet, of processed foods low in fiber content, high on preservatives, flour and sugar apart from saturated fats. Colon health is pretty much a result of our diets as also a few other aspects.

What Is Colon Cleanse And Why Is It Required
Simply put, colon cleanse is the act of cleaning of colon, when in problem, by some medically established methods. Before we get into the details of colon cleansing, let’s understand a little about colon and its problems.

Colon is towards the end of large intestine and is between cecum and rectum; colon extracts moisture from food residues before excretion. And cecum is the junction between large intestine and colon.

The food passes through the gastrointestinal system before it gathers at colon. The progressive contraction and squeezing of the intestinal muscles push the food forward till it reaches colon. It is here that water and vital nutrients are extracted and absorbed back before the fecal remains are eliminated out of the body.

Problems arise when the meal lacks fibers and fluids; foods and fecal material gets harder and movement through intestines and colon gets difficult. As a result, fecal material gets impacted as long as it is not excreted so that it makes space for more.

Next, not all wastes move easily through when fluid and fiber contents are lacking and sticking to the side walls which further restricts the passage for the on coming food. This further aggravates problems with fluid absorption. This condition is known as constipation.

Colon cleanse, in its generic meaning is nothing but enema, in which warm saline water or some kind of liquid is injected through anus to stimulate evacuation. However, five entirely dissimilar methods employed to colon cleanse.
1. Oxy-based Cleansers
2. Colonic irrigation or hydrotherapy
3. Herbal supplements
4. Use of Laxatives
5. Enema

Enema and colon hydrotherapy hardly have differences between them. Filtered warm water is admitted into colon and due to bowel movement all the clinging impacted material melts down and subsequently removed. Doctors discourage this type of colon cleansing as both enema and colon irrigation is employed in preparation for medical examination or surgery. Instead, herbal laxatives such as Psyllium husk are proven to have no side effects as they contain high fiber and mucilage and swell on soaking.

Your concerns about health are being misused by drawing attention to bogus statistics and testimonials. FDA has clarified with public warnings against some of the vendors in this connection. Remember, when colon cleanse is absolutely necessary, a doctor never delays to advise it.
